Cash Grab at PaB Wharf

WARNING: "Councillors" vote in Cash Grab at PaB Wharf

June 11, 2015 By Rock Hunter

So, what do you get for your tax dollars? Not even a Government Wharf it turns out. On May 15th 2015 council passed By Law No 15-16 which enacts fees for the use of the Pointe au Baril Wharf, among other obnoxious and unrealistic laws (including chaining your boat to the dock after two hours).

Here is my story. On Friday May 29, 2015 McNabb Lumber delivered $302.02 of lumber for me to the Pointe au Baril Wharf. Eleven boards, an impressively small pile. Upon pick up the Dock Attendant presented me with a form to fill out. Essentially a bill for the use of the Government Wharf. My choices $100.00 for seven consecutive days or $500.00 for seasonal use of the Pointe au Baril Wharf.

Did the Township notify me, in any way, that this change had been made? No. Is there any notice on their website? No. Can I even find By Law No. 15-16 on their website? No, not yet. Are they charging every user consistently? Reports are no. Do I get anything for my $5000.00+ annual tax bill? Apparently not. But they are sure quick to mail out a bill for $100.00, it arrived yesterday. A $100.00 bill for a $300.00 wood delivery, they have to be kidding right? No.

It is hard for me to say the "Councillors" are representing the seasonal residents of Pointe au Baril who pay huge tax dollars every year, and get basically nothing.

I encourage you to read this outrageous by law here. Call your Councillors and give them the what for, but do not try to have a conversation with them why you are loading/unloading your vehicle, you might exceed the 20 minute limit.

May 15, 2015 Council minutes show Pointe au Baril Wharf Fees moved by Councilor Greg Andrews and Seconded by Councilor Gary French.
